History

Mandalay has the significant heritage of being designed by Oldham Boas Ednie-Brown architects in 1988 for Lord Alistair McAlpine, a British politician and businessman and visionary who contributed to many projects throughout Western and Northern Australia. One of four prestigious stone clad homes, Mandalay exudes the highest quality of craftsmanship of material in an ode to the colonial pioneers of Northern Australia.

All of which is reflective of Lord McAlpine and his interest in Northern Australia, its rugged and beautiful outback and his love of the art of the Australian indigenous and Sir Sydney Nolan.

Lord McAlpine is noted for other prestigious Australian developments dating back to his arrival in the 1960’s – including but not limited to the Parmelia Hilton in Perth, Cable Beach in Broome and McAlpine House in Broome.

Lord McAlpine was a fantastic benefactor to Australian tourism and the quality development of the far north and west of Australia.

We have tried to represent and extend Lord Alistair McAlpine’s great north west Australian vision through Mandalay Luxury Stay, which offers guests a luxurious colonial north Australian getaway, decorated with tropical south east Asian furnishings and Australian and Indigenous Australian artworks.
